Q and A

Question

Can you enter Israel with ARVs?

Hi. My question is that can I carry my 2 months of ARV medication in Israel?

Answer

Hi, how are you?

Israel has no travel restrictions for those who are HIV positive. Though if you declare your status they do reserve the right for entry.

To travel with 2 months of medication, taking your doctors note can prove that your medication is for personal use.

Have you contacted your local Israeli embassy for any further information?

Josh.

Hi Petronella, there are no restrictions in Israel for travel. Are you able to get a months supply of treatment from your clinic in SA? I-base is a UK based charity. I am unsure of access in Israel. For information about access it would be more suitable to contact the Israel Aids Task Force: https://www.aidsisrael.org.il/

Hi Danny, at i-base we use this same resource. As i-base is designed for treatment information, we have less about travel restrictions and policy. Unfortunately this is a difficult situation to navigate with counties less welcoming of those who are HIV positive.

In this case there is a chance that if your meds are found, this will lead to your status being disclosed and being barred from entry – for this reason your third option would not be possible. Living within ARVs for 12 days is not the beast healthcare anyway, however finding your meds would mean they would know your status.

Some people do choose to switch how they store the medication. While carrying with a doctors note is often recommended, it would still remain that they would be able to figure out your status. Some people use vitamin pots to store their medication.

Have you contacted your local embassy? They will have more information and you can call/ask anonymously as not to disclose who you are.

    Hi
I will be traveling with a tour group to Israel ( 10 nights) via Egypt ( 2 nights ). I have been on arv for 7 years and undetectable with avg cd4 of 300-400. I am on FTC (teno, lamivudine or emtritacibine and efavirenz). I am concerned if there are any short term tourist restrictions to these countries carrying arv. Can you advise ? I have gone on hivtravel.org but it seems contradictory (no hiv requirements for short term stays but the customs can deny entry if they find your meds or know your status…

Also, i read that some say put the meds in a different container, while others say carry a doctor’s prescription with original container ( but this will let customs know i am hiv poz) … it seems very confusing.

In case they confiscate my arv at customs, can i live without arv for 12 days ?? Will my viral load rebound ?

    Thank you

Hi Yakubu, there is HIV in Israel. Israeli government reserves the right to deny entry of foreign people living with HIV. However, if resident of Israel these laws are no applied and it is legal to live in Israel.

Does that mean there’s no hiv in isreal?
