Q and A

Question

Can I get an STI from my HIV positive partner?

Is it possible to get an STI from your partner who’s HIV positive? and you you will not be affected with HIV?

Answer

Hi, how are you?

Yes this is possible. HIV medication only protects from HIV.

If your partner has an undetectable viral load (below 200), there is no risk of HIV. This is explained by U=U and they are unable to transmit HIV via sex.

Using a condom will protect against STIs. Without this there is still a risk of STI even if your partner is on HIV treatment.

Josh.
