Q and A

Question

Are there new therapies for HIV/HBV co-infection?

I have been on emtricitabine-tenofovir and raltegravir for six years for both my HIV and Hepatitis B, both of which are now undetectable.

Are there now newer therapy options which would enable me to take just one pill day, or perhaps even an injectable form?

Answer

Hi, how are you doing?
It is great to hear that both HBV and HIV are undetectable.
For co-infection dual HBV treatment – TDF/FTC or TDF/3TC or TAF/FTC. These are all combination of emtricitabine, tenofovir (DF and AF) and lamivduine.
For this reason, if you switch rilpirivine with bictegravir, a one pill option is available – Biktarvy (BIC/TAF/FTC)
As current injections only treat HIV, additional oral meds would be needed for HBV.
For all the uncertainties of injections, plus the need to take a daily pill, Biktary would be better,
Josh.
