Q and A

Question

Can baby have breastmilk and cereals?

Hi I’ve been positive for six years, my viral load is undetected. I have a three months old baby whom mom baby sits while I am at work. I realised that my mom is feeding him cereals, will this affect his status?

Answer

Hi, how are you doing?

Congratulations on having a baby. Mixed feeding isn’t generally recommended as this can have some risk of increasing the chance of HIV transmission. However as you are undetectable this risk is already very small. Is baby still taking any medication?

How often is baby having cereal while you are at work? and is it possible for you to express before you go to work? Baby is still a little young for cereals. If baby does need more food during the day while you are at work and you cannot express, formula should be used instead.

Josh.

I Anonymous, I am sorry to hear you had post weaning depression. What is baby being fed? 10 weeks is still early to be given solids. Unfortautnely I am not aware of any groups that you are suggesting. i-base is a treatment information charity and we are not involved with forums similar to what you have mentioned. Do you know if you have a local peer support group for HIV? Even if this is not suitable, it is likely there have been women who have had healthy, HIV negative babies in this group.

    Hi Josh

I suffered a post weaning depression because I was forced to stop breastfeeding my baby as my family wanted to give him solids at 10 weeks.
My question is, is there a website where there are people who are like mentor mothers? People who breastfed their babies as they should and got negative results at the end.
I am sorry if this is not the right platform to ask.
