Q and A

Question

Is my parter at risk if I am on PEP?

Hi, I am on PEP. I am 14 days in an had unprotected sex with my partner for 30 seconds. I felt bad while I was doing it so I stopped. Did I put my partner at risk? I started taking PEP 5 hrs after exposure, not sure if the person had HIV or not.

Answer

Hi, how are you doing?

As you are on PEP and had sex lasting for 30 seconds, you have not put your partner at risk.

It is advised to not have sex while on PEP, or to use condoms/PrEP for the duration of the course. But as this was only a limited exposure and it is more likely that your own exposure was with someone negative, the risk to your partner is negligible. They do not need to be on their own course of PEP.

Hi Bbbb, I do not recognise “cj”. Are you able to ask the pharmacist where you got the medication? Usually PEP is only one pill. In most cases it contains three different drugs but they are combined so you do not need multiple pills.

As you are on PEP and late in your course, transmission risk to your partner is minimal if at all. Your partner does not need PEP.

    Hello
I was prescribed hiv pep drugs for 30 days. The drugs were labeled “cj”. Only one tablet for a day. Is taking a single tablet a day effective?
Also, on the 29th day, I had unprotected sex with my partner, what are the chances of transmission in any case?
