Question

Restarting meds after a year…

I have a friend who hasn’t taken his meds in a year and now he wants to start taking them again. I told him I’m not sure if the meds are still going to work but they don’t expire until 2024. What advance should I give him?

Answer

Hi, how are you doing?

It is great that your friends wants to start treatment again. Has he had any recent viral load/CD4 tests done? and why did they stop with their medication to begin with?

Their medication will likely to still work. Even though it has been a year, resistance is not very common. Will he be able to get a viral load test after a few weeks? This will let him know that his treatment is suppressing his viral load again and that it is working.

As the medication expires in 2024 it will still be suitable to take.

Josh.
