Q and A

Question

My CD4 count has only gone up by 90 in 12 years.

I was diagnosed positive in 1994. Started treatment in 2011. My CD4 count was 97 when I started treatment. My recent blood results February 2023 is, viral load undetectable but my concern was my CD4 count which went up by 90 in 12 years of treatment. Why is this?

Answer

Hi, how are you doing?

How long did it take on treatment for you to have an undetectable viral load?

While your CD4 count has been low have you been on any other medication? Usually it is an antibiotic called co-trimoxazole. This is used to prevent other infections.

Unfortautnely CD4 counts are not guaranteed to recover. Starting lower means that it can take longer, if ever, for a CD4 count to be in a healthy range again. Have you had any problems with your health since starting treatment?

Josh.

Hi Devin, it was great how quickly you became undetectable. How has your health been with your CD4 count? Have you had more recurrent infections? noticed any other problems with your health?
