Question

Will 2 drugs work as PEP?

I was exposed 12 days ago and I went to the clinic for PEP but was given 2 drugs combination PrEP and just discovered yesterday that was given PrEP instead of PEP. Is 2 drug will work as PEP?

Answer

Hi, how are you doing?

Yes. 2 drugs are suitable to be used as PEP. PrEP and PEP use the same drugs. It is okay that you have been given PrEP to use as PEP.

Usually PEP is given as a combination of 3 drugs but the evidence for using 3 is quite low. It is generally recommended to be 3 for completion rather than increasing how effective PEP will be.

Hi Fridah, PEP is usually recommended to be a combination fo 3 drugs. TLD as you have mentioned contains 3 and Truvada only uses 2.

The recommendation for using a 3 drug combination is not based on strong evidence. It is more so recommended on the basis of completion. When it is not possible to use a third drug, it is considered effective to use a 2 drug combination such as Truvada.

Hi. I have a question. Between Truvada and TLD…which one would you recommend for PEP?

If the Doctor recommends TLD as opposed to Truvada which includes Tenofovir, Lamivudine and Dolutegravir…. should somebody get worried that they might miss out on one drug component (Emtricitabine) which is in Truvada?
