Question

Can an HIV negative baby have Novatrim?

Hi can Novatrim suspension be given to a baby ho is HIV negative?

Answer

Hi, how are you doing?

Yes baby can still take Novatrim.

Novatrim is used to prevent other infections, not prevent HIV.

It is used when there is some risk of transmission from infections other than HIV that mum is at risk of. It is usually stopped after breastfeeding.

Josh.

Hello Adeline and thanks for getting in touch.

That is a known side effect of novatrim.

I am sorry you have to experience it, though.

You can try taking it with food, avoid fatty food until the diarrhoea is settled and ensure you drink enough fluids.

Have you discussed this with your clinic?

They can sometimes give you medication for it and support you if you still have these symptoms.
