Question

Can an HIV negative baby have Novatrim?

Hi can Novatrim suspension be given to a baby ho is HIV negative?

Answer

Hi, how are you doing?

Yes baby can still take Novatrim.

Novatrim is used to prevent other infections, not prevent HIV.

It is used when there is some risk of transmission from infections other than HIV that mum is at risk of. It is usually stopped after breastfeeding.

Josh.

Hello Michelle and thanks for getting in touch.

Novatrim is safe for children, however I would urge you to speak with your doctor and ask any questions you have about your baby’s medication.

We only give information about HIV treatments for adults

Hello Criff and thanks for getting in touch.

    Congratulations on your baby.

Novatrim is an antibiotic. It is safe for babies and many of them have had it over the years without any problems.

Why was it given to your baby? Was the dose correct?

If you are worried about your baby you should always ask a doctor about it.

I am afraid our knowledge here is about ARVs so it’s always best when children are involved to raise the issue with your doctor.

Hi my baby was given novatrim suspension and the nurse said it’s for treating air that is in the stomach. Now I’m worried because after taking the med she’s crying unstop
