Q and A

Question

How long will CD4 take to recover?

My cousin after having a serious illness PCP pneumonia then she got to know she had positive. And diagnosed with proper treatment she was recovered but CD4 count was 12 and viral load was 225000copies/ML. After 4months of ART Actriptiga tested now CD4 count was 74 and VL was less then 30copies/ML. Her spouse has initially CD4 was 61 and VL 110000copies/ML but luckily he doesn’t have any problems and on ART with same medication he has now CD4 was 156 and VL less than 30copies/ML. Now we are worrying about CD4 count how long it will take to restore normal means at least 200 for both. Is that medicine is good enough or need any change of medication pls suggest us. Both are taking Bactrim daily and Forcan once in a week from last 4 months.

Answer

Hi, how are you doing?

It is great to hear how well both your cousin and spouse have responded to treatment.

Both your cousin and spouse now have a suppressed viral load. This means that HIV is no longer damaging their immune systems and their CD4 count can recover naturally.

As they have suppressed viral loads, there is no better medication they can be taking. Acriptega is working. It is good they are both on the antibiotic. This will help to prevent other infections as their immune systems recover.

CD4 count recovery is slow. It is good to see that it is already improving but the process does take time. The lower the CD4 count from starting treatment, the slower recovery is to reach a healthy CD4 count range.

Recovery can take more than a year. It is important to monitor this with regular checks. Please see this previous question.

Josh.
