Question
How long should my baby be on meds?
17 August 2023. Related: Adherence, All topics, Children.
Hi I am an HIV+ mom and have been on treatment for over 10 years now, viral load is undetected. Just had a baby (3weeks old) in USA who when discharged from the hospital was placed on zidouovine for 27 days. I am worried because I feel he should be on it for 6 weeks, now I want to know if I should continue his medication with nevirapine given to me by my clinic in Africa to 6 weeks? Am breastfeeding my baby.
Answer
Hi, how are you doing?
Congratulations on having a baby.
Baby being given treatment for only 4 weeks is not uncommon.
As you have been on established treatment for so long and you are undetectable, the risk to baby is minimal.
When the risk is this small, it is only advised for baby to be on treatment for 4 weeks, in some case it may only be 2 weeks.
Baby does not need to continue on any further treatment.
Josh.
