Q and A

Question

How do I prevent transmission to baby?

I am an HIV positive patient and recently fell pregnant.is there any medication that I need to take to protect my child from getting infected?

Answer

Hi, how are you doing?

Congratulations on your pregnancy.

Are you on HIV treatment? This is the best and only thing you need to be taking to reduce the risk of HIV transmission to as low as possible.

When on treatment, the risk to baby is less than 1% when the viral load is suppressed.

Treatment is safe to take while pregnant and during breastfeeding. There is no risk of harm and is the best way to keep both you and baby healthy.

Baby will also be given treatment for a short while after birth to reduce the risk even further. This is explained here.

Josh.
