Q and A

Question

Will IVF prevent infant transmission?

Good day, my wife and I are both positive and we have been trying to conceive naturally which is not working maybe because of age.

We decided to go go IVF and we are already in it, my wife has started the IVF treatment to prepare her body.

My question is, hope after artificial insemination (IVF) is being transferred, the baby wuld be free of hiv (negative)?

Hope transferring by IVF won’t affect the baby status since we parents are HIV positive.. Though we are undetectable in viral loads.

Thanks

Answer

Hi, how are you doing?

It is great to hear that you are both doing well on treatment with undetectable viral loads.

As you are both undetectable you are already doing everything to prevent transmission.

When on treatment with viral loads as low as yours, the risk of transmission is less than 1%. IVF will not eliminate this risk but you are both doing everything you can to prevent transmission.

Baby will also be given their own treatment for a short while after birth to reduce this risk even more.

Josh.
