Q and A

Question

How long will it take for my CD4 count to recover?

Hi I stopped my treatment just over a year and a half ago, mental issues, I started again about 4 months ago. I got my first results today with a cd4 count of 249 when do you think I will be undetectable is it possible in undetectable already ?

Answer

Hi, how are you doing?

It is great to hear that you have been able to restart your medication. Have you been told what your viral load is?

As your CD4 count is still quite low. Have you been given any other medication as your CD4 count recovers? Usually this is an antibiotic called co-trimoxazole. This is used to prevent other infections as your immune system recovers.

Are you on the same treatment as you were before? In most cases restarting treatment will work as well as before the break. You can confirm this with a viral load test. In most cases people will become undetectable within 3 months (usually 1).

CD4 recovery is a slower process. Unlike viral load which responds immediately to treatment. CD4 count can take a few years to recover but it will go up when adhering to treatment. What was your CD4 count to start?

Josh.
