Question
Are there interactions between PrEP and my other meds?

Hi there, I wanted to know if oral PrEP is okay to take with my other meds – and also if my other meds interact with each other. Can I also use viagra?
I get my PrEP online and don’t want to tell my GP about using PrEP for confidential reasons.
I am using tenofovir/emtricitabine for PrEP and my other meds are tamsulosin (alpha-blocker), atorvastatin and two asthma drugs – beclometasone and Ventolin inhaler,
Answer
Hi there
Thanks – the best online interaction checker is run by Liverpool University,
https://www.hiv-druginteractions.org/checker
Select the HIV meds from the left column and your other meds from the centre column. It is best to use the activie ingredients rather than the brand name or marketing name. So for Ventolin I used the generic name salbutamol,
Liverpool showed a green light showing no interactions between any of these meds, with or without PrEP.
You also have the options to download a PDF summary that explains the results – see this link:
Download PDF summary.
If there were possible interactions, this would include info on whether the interaction increased or decreased each drug and whether your doctor needed to adjust your doses.
