Q and A

Question

Can I get married if I am HIV positive?

Hi. Can I marry if I am HIV positive? I am only 28 male, and just diagnosed. How long I can live if I start HAART in future? Do you also think there will be more treatement options in future? Thank you

Answer

Yes, most countries have no legal obstacles against marriage, though many countries do have laws that saw you need to tell your partner about your HIV status. There are some countries where discrimination limits human rights, so it also depends where you live.

Many HIV positive men get married – to partners who are either HIV positive or HIV negative. If their partner is HIV-negative it is still possible to have children

    Hi Yonathan,

I’m really sorry to hear that it’s difficult to get the U=U message through to your Jewish community. But there are great resources for the U=U message at this link http://i-base.info/u-equals-u-qa/. I hope this can help.

However, please see this Q&A about websites to meet other people. I hope there are people from all communities at this website.

In the age of U=U the sad fact remains that outside of the HIV community we are still seen as pariahs because of our status within the religious communities (Jewish guy here). Still living life undetectable, however, I gave up finding a Jewish woman to marry and have kids with 11 years ago at the age of 30 as it is a non starter. Maybe in the next life.

    Hi Celesine,

You can look at this Q&A about websites to meet other people who are HIV positive. This is a good place to start.

The community forums at poz.com include a personals section that has free registration and many thousands of international users.

The check list at this link is a good overview if you are new to meeting people by internet.

    Good luck to you.

    Hi Longli,

It’s common to feel worried about telling a loved one that you’re positive. As too whether you tell them or not, only you can make this decision. However, being positive shouldn’t restrict you to dating just positive people.Lots of positive people are in relationships with negative people and it isn’t an issue.
