Q and A

Question

What is the best way to switch to Atripla?

I am thinking of switching to Atripla as I am currently taking Truvada+Sustiva. At the moment I take Truvada in the morning and Sustiva at bedtime.

Would it be possible for me to take both pills at bedtime to see how I will get on before switching to Atripla? Would it be like missing (or being late 15 hours) the Truvada morning dose if I do take them both at bedtime on the first day? Is there a procedure to follow?

Should I change the time of intake (Truvada) gradually until I get to bedtime? If so how? I have asked my doctor and the pharmacist and I am waiting for their reply, but would like your opinion also.

Thank you

Answer

Yes, it is fine to try this with your current formulations.

Although efavirenz should be taken at night, Truvada (tenofovir + FTC) can be taken in the morning or at night.

The best way to switch to Atripla is to still take your morning dose of Truvada and then to take another Atriplaz at night with the efavirenz.

It is better to bring the new dose forwards than letting your drug levels fall to very low levels by delaying a dose past 24 hours.
