Q and A

Question

Can I catch HIV when I am taking PEP?

What is my risk of contracting HIV from a positive partner if I was at the end of an ARV course?

Answer

Thank you for your question.

Did you mean you were at the end of a 28-day course of PEP?

Theoretically, being on PEP will lessen the risk but there are no data on whether this would stop the risk. If your partner is stable on treatment and with an undetectable viral load for more than 6 months then the risk on transmission is probably low.

Your local GUM clinic may suggest a slightly longer dose to cover you for the latest exposure, but I think this is unlikely to be recommended.

Hi, no you do not need to extend the course of your PEP. As you were already on the 26th day of PEP, this medication would be also acting as PrEP. For this reason you can finish PEP when you were initially going to.

Hello, I was on pep medication and on 26th day had another exposer, do I go for more for more than a month on PEP or I am safe at 30 days of medication?
