Q and A

Question

Do HIV medicines lower your sex drive?

My partner is HIV positive and takes medicine. He is only 29 years old. I am HIV negative and feel like it is me and not his HIV that is affecting is sex drive. Can you please answer my question I would greatly appreciate it?

Answer

Thank you for your question.

A lower sex drive is more common in HIV positive people due to both medical and psychological reasons. HIV positive men and women have less testosterone which can result in a lower libido. It is also possible that your partner is worrying about infecting you with HIV and this is causing him to lose his sex drive.

Other non-HIV-realted factors include age (over 40), diabetes, hypertension, depression, use of steroids, fear of failure, stress.

HIV-related sexual dysfunction is more usually associated with people who are not on treatment.

    Hi Matthews, this difficulty you are having is not a side effect of ARVs. Did this start when you started treatment?

    Hi Wonder,

    As the above post explains, a loss in sex drive can be due to a number of reasons. As you’re on medication it’s very unlikely that it’s anyting to do with you being positive. As this is an issue it may be worth seeking medical help.

    Hi;

    I’m a married guy aged 36; tested positive in 2013 and started ARV in 2016. I used to be sexual active and 5/6 rounds was not a problem. Now I’ve been observing my sex Drive is detoriating; I cant even take 2 minutes in that round I ejaculate and loose confidence and feel embarrassed.

    What would be the cause and how can I improve my sexy drive?

    Kylot

    Hi I’m also 29 years and I’m HIV o started to take my treatment last months after 2 weeks taking them them I started to be sexual active. Sex was not my thing and i was satisfied with only one round but now I now I want a man everyday and if he is to of me I feel like he is doing nothing, I want to drive it by my self. I think it’s about a person or a body. Give her a time or try new things to improve you sex life
