Q and A

Question

Is my CD4 count and viral load within the normal ranges?

I am currently on treatment my latest result were: viral load 29 and CD4 count 431 is this within accepteble ranges?

Answer

Thank you for your question.

Your results are very good. Once you are on treatment the most important thing to monitor is your viral load which should, wherever possible, remain under 50 copies/mL. Some people get the occassional ‘blip’ where the viral load goes up a little bit and then down again. This is nothing to worry about. Your viral load of 29 is very good.

Which treatments are you on? Have you experienced any side effects? When did you start treatment?

    Hi Michel,

Your CD4 is high, this is great. Are you on medication? If you are how long have you been on it for? What are you taking? How much weight have you lost and over what period of time?

MY last test of CD4 count was 700 is this considered good? I have lost a lot of fat and much slimmer now. But I feel tired all the time and weak all the time!
Is there anything I can do or take to improve it further?

Hi Tina, Even if your CD4 count has gone down to 560 it’s still within the normal range. And getting viral load to undetectable is the way HIV meds work. So a drop in viral load is a good thing.

Hi Osh, If your viral load has been undetectable it could be a blip, but it’s a good idea to get another test. Here is the answer to a very similar question.

    Hi Tearful,

Once a person stops medication their viral load begins to increase, this is why yours has risen. For it to be undetectable again you will need to be on meds. Why did your doctor suggest that you stop?

I was just told after being off meds for 3 months due to Drs recommendation. That my CD4 is 600 and my VL is 5000. Causing me now to be detectable. 3 months ago I was undetectable. Why why???

    Hi Danny,

A CD4 count of 500 is high, its no where near to a level where it could be a concern. Which is good. Even though your viral load is 7000 once you begin meds, this will drop.
