Question
I'm 19 and think I have HIV?
31 October 2010. Related: All topics, HIV testing, HIV transmission.
I haven’t been tested for HIV but I’ve always had unprotected sex and most men cum inside me. I’m 19 now and I’ve been barebacking since I was 18 and there’s no doubt in my mind that I have the virus. I don’t know what to do. Should I just let it progress and let the virus kill me? I could never afford the medication. Is there counciling for guys as young as me I could talk to?
Answer
Hi
Thank you for sending your questions and allowing us to answer online so other people can see the information.
Lots of people think they have HIV who then turn out to have been lucky and find they are still HIV-negative. Even though it sounds like you have been at high risk, this could be the case for you.
Because you have had many risks, it is also possible that you are HIV-positive.
You can only be sure by taking an HIV test.
There are many helpline services in the US that can help you through this process. If you are positive, there are also programmes that will help you access continued monitoring and treatment if and when this is appropriate.
The AIDS Drug Assistance Programme (ADAP) and Medicaid provides free or reduced cost treatment for people who cannot afford treatment in every US state. Treatment works and hundreds of thousands of people in the US are now alive because of HIV treatment.
It sounds like the first step is to speak to someone. Most cities have free testing centre’s where you can also talk about your situation and your worries. If you do not want to go to a testing centre yet, perhaps contact one of the following organisations.
Project Inform (National, but based in San Francisco): 1-800-822-7422.
Health Initiatives For Youth (HIFY): http://www.hify.org/talk_2_hand.htm
POZ.com has a lot of information about testing and treatment, but also one of the best online community forums.
You are not on your own. A lot of other young people find themselves in the same situation, but getting some support and help now is important.
If you would like the details of a support group in your State or city, please email me this info and I can post the organisation online, or email you privately if you prefer.
