Q and A

Question

If my CD4 count is 1295, does it mean I no longer have HIV?

I am HIV positive. My first CD4 count was 685 and then it went up to 1295 does that mean I am healthy and is the virus cleared in my body?

Answer

Thank you for your question.

A CD4 count of 1295 is fantastic! However, unfortunately it does not mean HIV is cleared from your body. CD4 counts do fluctuate up and down. It could also be that you were recently infected and your CD4 count is increasing after the initial infection. For more information please follow this link.

The good news is that your immune system is very good as your CD4 count is so high.

What is your viral load result? Usually this would be detectable, even with a high CD4 count, though a small percentage of people (less than 0.01%) maintain a high CD4 count and undetectable viral load, without needing HIV treatment.

Hi Lukas, thanks for your comment. I hope you and your wife are okay. It is difficult to find out you are positive but treatment is very good now. You can still have a baby, but your wife will need to use HIV meds. After she has been on treatment for six months, the risk to you dramatically drops. Until then it is good for you to use a condom. After this it is okay to conceive a baby naturally.

Hi Hpthakur – please can you repost your question. Your CD4 count is very good but it looks like you were going to ask another question.

Hi Jacob. A CD4 count above 500 is very good. It is often referred to as “normal” – ie as good as if she was HIV negative.

Is your wife on HIV treatment?

Yes! HIV treatment guidelines sometimes recommend starting TB treatment first – before you start HIV treatment (ART). Usually this happens if your CD4 count is very low because it makes it easier to treat TB.

You have a good CD4 count. Starting ART can help keep you healthy and keep your CD4 count high.

You can talk to the doctor about taking the TB meds, and making sure you take the full course. Talk to the doctor too about starting ART if you haven’t already started.

I found that I’m HIV positive weeks ago, my CD4 count is 760. What should I do to stay healthy? My doc gave me TB treatment, is that cool?

It could be a blip. This is when your viral load goes from undetectable (under 50) to 200 or 500.

Sometimes it happens when you have flu, or a recent vaccination. Usually if someone has what looks like a blip they have another test to confirm that it was. So it’s important that you have another test to make sure that your meds are working properly.

You can find out more information about viral load blips here.
