Q and A

Question

What are the side effects of atazanavir, abacavir and Atripla?

I am due to be starting on a combination of abacavir and atazanavir. This was after it being decided that due to my experiences of anxiety and depression Atripla may be too stressful in the early stages. My question is, what are the likely side effects for the above combination and is there is a difference in potency/effectiveness of this combination in comparison to Atripla?

Answer

Thank you for your question.

Both combinations are very effective at getting your viral load to undetectable levels. For information about the different drugs and their side effects please follow these links for atazanavir, abacavir and Atripla. If your viral load is above 100,000 or if you are at great risk of heart diseases (a greater than 10% risk over 10 years) then you should avoid taking abacavir.

It is important to remember that side effects always sound worse than they actually are and most people either experience mild side effects which go away after a few weeks or do not experience any side effects at all.
