Q and A

Question

Can I take antibiotics with my ARVs?

I am not currently needing meds for myself but am on Kaletra and Combivir as I am pregnant, I have been to the out of hours doctor today and I have been diagnosed with a kidney infection, he has prescribed Cephalexin. I didnt want to discuss my other treatment with him and I cannot get hold of my HIV doc to double check its ok to take the antibiotics with the other drugs, please could you advise.

Answer

Thank you for your question.

You should be fine to take cephalexin with your current HIV meds. There are no reported interactions. However, if you experience any symptoms after you have started taking these drugs you should contact your HIV doctor as soon as possible.

Congratulations on the pregnancy!

Hi Elizabeth, do you know your CD4 count and viral load? and what treatment have you started? I am sorry to hear that you are experiencing diarrhoea ad chills – is this being addressed by your doctor? and is your doctor managing your anaemia and saliva? and if so do you know what they are trying?

There are some alternatives that can work similar to co-trimoxazole as you have an allergy. These inc. cindamycin with primaquine, pentamadine, or dapsone plus trimethoprim. Have any of these options been mentioned to you before?

I have recently tested hiv positive, was started on art 2 weeks ago. However have also stated diarrhoea, and have chills followed by fever at least twice a day and cannot take cotimoxazole as am allergic to sulphers. My mouth is so dry no saliva and am anaemic. Please advise

Hi Ngozi, are you able to speak to a pharmacist? i-base do not employ trained doctors and cannot suggest options for treatment for other infections. A pharmacist should be able to manage suitable medication. If you remain unsure of interaction, you can then return to i-base and we can determine if there are any interactions for the medications you are intending to use.

Hi Zon, the only potential interaction between the medications you have mentioned is between co-trimoxozole and lamivudine (one of the drugs in TLD). This interaction causes more lamviduine to be absorbed by the body. If your kidneys are fine, you are okay to take them together. If not, you can avoid this interaction by taking TLD and co-trimoxazole at different times in the day.
