Q and A

Question

I have had one negative and one positive test, what should I do?

At first I tested positive in 2007 and in 2009 I tested negative. I am afraid to test again and my girlfriend is pregnant I am scared

Answer

Thank you for your question.

It is normal to feel scared about going for a HIV test especially if one test you had was positive.

However it is very important that you get your status confirmed so you can move on and access the care you need whether you are positive or negative. Your girlfriend should also get tested if she is pregnant.

Maybe you could go together to support one another during this difficult time.

Based on the negative test at 92 days you do not have HIV.

The test at 45 days meant that there was only a 5% chance that the negative results might be positive later.

The other tests in between were a waste of money and resources and the testing centre should have told you this.

Modern HIV tests cover all subtypes.

I had unprotect sex with a lady of unknown HIV status 4 months ago. Then i had hiv ab/ag p24 test at 45, 61, 70, 80, & 92 days in three diff hospitals & all came back negative.
    1. am i HIV negative?
    2. do these test detect different groups & subtypes?
    3. do I need to test any more because of different strains or subtypes?
