Q and A

Question

Can ARV treatment cause aching feet?

Answer

Yes, a side effect called peripheral neuropathy can cause aching feet, numbness and also pain.

Please see this link for more details.

It is caused mainly by two drugs:

  • d4t (stavudine)
  • ddI (didanosine)

If you are taking either of these drugs, speak to your doctor about changing them for alternatives. Do not stop the drugs though until you speak to your doctor.

Sometimes a lower dose of d4T can be used, but it is better to change to a completely different drug.

    Hi Bonga,

What meds are you taking? These symptoms sound unusual. And if you have a very very very high temperature you should have a check up at the clinic. It’s a good idea to ask the doctor what can be causing these symptoms.

Hi Innocent, I am sorry you are having this problem. What does your doctor say? If this is neuropathy, then is might be from HIV rather than from the meds, especially if your CD4 count was very low before starting treatment. Unfortunately, this is diicult to treat or reverse, but there is more information at this link:

    Has the rash gone?
If you fell like you legs are retaining water this is something that you’ll need to talk to your doctor about.
