Question

How soon can I see HIV symptoms after unprotected sex?

Can you see signs of symptoms of HIV a day after having unprotected sex? Is it from a week or 2 onwards? I am freaking out a bit about this white patch under my cheek. What knd of STIs cause these white patches?

Answer

Thank you for your questions.

It is unlikely for you to experiences seroconversion symptoms the very next day after being exposed to HIV. It takes at least a couple of weeks and you usually have more than one symptom at once.

If you are worried about any STIs the best thing is to go to a GUM clinic and have anything that you are concerned about checked out.

Assuming its your first time to have unprotected sex with a person who is HIV positive and you’re circumcised, is there a bigger chance to be infected?

Being on treatment usually means that person is less likely to pas on HIV. HIV is actually quite difficult to catch, even if you are having condomless sex.

The only way to know for sure if he is positive or negative is for him to get tested.

You can find information on HIV testing and transmission here: http://i-base.info/guides/testing
