Question
Will I be able to buy HIV treatment on my visit to the UK?
10 May 2008. Related: Access to treatment, Adherence, All topics.
I am an HIV positive guy visiting the UK and am on HIV medication – Viread, Stocrin and Lamivir. Unfortunately I will be out of stock in two days and I need to know how to get medication from the UK and what the procedures are. Is there a possibility that I can get medication for free for the coming 10 days? If not, can I get medication by pill, i.e. can I buy medication for ten days only and not for the whole month? Please answer as it is really urgent.
Answer
Thank you for your questions.
I am afraid in order to get HIV treatment in the UK, you do need a prescription. If you have a prescription, paying for HIV treatment, even if it is for just ten days, can be very costly.
Additionally, depending on where you are visiting from (a European Union or non European country) different rules might apply.
