Q and A

Question

Which countries that do not allow HIV positive people to visit?

Can you please name a few countries who do not allow hiv +ve people? What about Saudi Arabia ?

Answer

Further information on the legislation of the different countries is published at the following link:

It is important to recognise that what countries have on paper is impossible to enforce in practice. Even when countries say that HIV is a bar to entry, and even if they maintain the right to test you, this very rarely happens unless they have a reason to think you are HIV positive.

Even with restrictive policies, for short trips, some HIV positive people still travel for holidays and business. The main complication comes if your meds are found by border control or immigration.

For this reason some people decide not to travel to countries that show this discrimination.

Hi Sindy, please see this link for information about Spain.
    https://www.hivtravel.org/Default.aspx?PageId=143&CountryId=163
It includes links to Spanish organisations such as gTt in Barcelona who will know more.
Economic issues, including COVID, means that HIV meds might not easily be available to non-Spanish/EU citizens now but being a student might be different. It is probably better to bring your own meds with you, including for longer than three months if possible. There are no entry restrictions for people living with HIV.

I am planning on going to Spain for one year, I am a non-EU citizen but I will be granted a study visa. I am afraid of being stopped at the borders by officials, is it wise to bring a huge amount of medication- longer than 3 months? Do you know if they will test for HIV?

    Thank you

    Hi Cebile,

Yes people who are positive can work in the UK, when applying for a visa your status won’t be an issue.

    Hi Sharif,

Info about traveling to Cyprus can be found here: https://www.hivtravel.org/Default.aspx?PageId=143&CountryId=56 If you’re traveling with medication it might be worth having a letter from your doctor. I doubt they would seize them as positive people are allowed to enter the country.

I am planning on travelling to cyprus to work under a company, I’m HIV POSTIVE … And as I am on medication ,will they grant me a working visa and will they also question what my medicines are for and are likely to seize them ?

Your quick response would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

Am HIV positive with my wife and wants to relocate to Canada. Will my status make me inadmissible in Canada?
    Please advise me.
    Thanks.

i-Base provides info about HIV treatment. We do not specialise in travel, immigration or employment issues. Further information on the legislation of the different countries is published at the following link:

We are also based in the UK. HIV status is not important when applying for a visa to visit, live, work or get married in the UK. There are no HIV tests for any of these.
