Q and A

Question

How can I get pregnant when I am HIV positive?

Can you please give me information on the right procedure in getting pregnant when you are HIV positive?

Answer

Thank you for your question.

There are different options as regards getting pregnant when you are HIV positive.

The options take into consideration whether your partner is also HIV positive or whether they are HIV negative.

As you have not indicated this in your email, I am sending you our general guide on HIV, pregnancy and women’s health. The guide includes detailed information on the various options available. Please follow this link to this guide to HIV and pregnancy for more information.

Hi, I am HIV positive and my partner is negative. I have been on ARV for 6 years now and I just am 2 weeks pregnant. Can I continue taking my ARV drugs or I should be getting different ones?

    Thank you

    Hi Nonto,

If you’re having issues with conceving, it’s not due to you being positive, nor is it due to any ARVs that you might be taking. If you’re having issues, you will need to talk to a doctor.

    Hi Oluwatosin,

There is good news. Women around the world have taken HIV drugs safely in pregnancy now for over 20 years. This usually involves taking at least three drugs and is called antiretroviral therapy (ART).

Taking ART and having an undetectable viral load can reduce the risk of HIV to your baby to close to zero.

You can find out much more at this link to FAQs on having a baby.

Here’s a link to the guide to HIV Pregnancy and Women’s Health.

Please let us know if you’re taking ART. And if you have access to your CD4 count and viral load results, please tell us these too.

    Hi Sphu,

If you want to ensure that there is no risk to your partner you need to be on medication. Once you’re on medication (this is assuming that you aren’t) and your viral load is undetectable there’s no risk to your partner. Please here: http://i-base.info/u-equals-u/ As well as the above post.

    Hi Polly,

We are not doctors at i-Base unfortunately so it’s a good idea to see the doctor about whether you’re pregnant.

But how is your HIV treatment going? Do you both have an undetetcable viral load? Please see undetectable = untransmittable (U=U) here.

Many congratulations if you are going to have a baby. Here’s the i-Base guide to HIV pregnancy and women’s health.
