Question
My viral load is still detectable after 5 months on treatment
25 November 2011. Related: All topics, CD4 and viral load, Starting treatment.
I just got my latest viral load result. It is just over 5 months since I started treatment. – darunavir/ritonavir + Truvada (tenofovir/FTC). The trend is still downwards from over a million on diagnosis to 1300 about 3 months ago and now it is 86. My CD4 count is still going up.
Should I be worried that after 5 months I’m still not undetectable? Should I go and discuss it with my consultant?
Answer
Hi
The higher your viral load when you start treatment the more time you generally need to wait until you become undetectable.
Although many people become undetectable within the first few months if your start at over 1 million it takes a bit longer.
Your results show a perfect response from treatment and you have nothing to worry about.
