Q and A

Question

I'm newly diagnosed – can I infect someone if they give me oral sex?

I’m a woman that is living with hiv for the last six months. I feel that I cannot have a relationship again coz of this, im scared to give it to someone else. I’m wondering can a man get hiv if he gives me oral sex. I feel so lonely and confused.

Answer

I’m very sorry to hear about your new diagnosis and I can understand that you are quite concern aboutHIV transmission.  There are a few facts about oral transmission that you need to know and they can be found at this link below :

By the way, do you have any support at the moment?  Getting support from your local support group or a consellor can help you to come to terms living with HIV. Also you will be able to gain and share experiences with others who are in the similiar situation as you, rather than having to deal with it in isolation.

Good luck for the future and all the best.

HIV does not men you can’t have sex. There is no safety issue to your health. You can do this as many times a day or week or month as you want or have energy for. This is your choice and of course your partners choice too.

HIV does mean that you have to protect your partners from catching HIV. This mean using a condom if you have vaginal or anal sex.

Even if your viral load is undetectable, you r partners are still likely to want to use a condom.

This also brings up the issue of telling your partner that you have HIV. In some countries (but not in the UK) it is a legal requirement. If you think your partner would react badly to knowing you are HIV positive, this is even more of a reason to tell them. Even when you are protecting your partner by being on treatment and using a condom, many people would want to make the choice themselves about whether to have sex.

This might mean rejection and less sex, but it also means you wont have to get close to stupid people who do not understand that condoms and HIV treatment together make it almost impossible for HIV to be transmitted.
