Question
Should I stop PEP?
10 January 2012. Related: All topics, PEP/PEPSE, Stopping treatment.
I had a needle stick injury on the 7th of January. A test using the first response kit on the patient’s blood was positive. I was hence enrolled on PEP an hour after the incidence because I tested negative.
An Elisa and determine test later showed a negative result on the patient’s sample.
I want to find out if I can stop the PEP.
Thank you
Answer
Thank you for your question.
It is difficult to comment without having the exact details or indeed
knowing which of the tests are accurate.
If however, the patient is HIV negative, then there is no need for you to
take PEP.
As regards stopping PEP, this is a decision only you can make once you have
discussed further with your clinic.
Healthcare workers usually have PEP guidelines in every country. You can ask your hospital, union or professional orgnaisation about these.
