Q and A

Question

I am taking PEP, can I have uprotected sex?

I’ve been taking lamzid for 5 days now and I want to find out how this will
affect my pregnant partner when we have unprotected sex?

I am taking lamzid because I slept with someone without a condom and I felt
very unsafe so I went to the doctor within 72 hours and he prescribed lamzid for me.

My pregnant partner is only 7weeks pregnant will this harm our baby?

Answer

There is no data on whether PEP can harm the unborn baby. However, unprotected sex whilst you are taking PEP is not recommended. This is because you don’t know your status and you could infect your partner. That is why it is important to wait until you finish the course and have done the follow-up confirmatory test.

Hi Ntsako, infection of a drug resistant strain depends on who you contracted HIV from. If HIV had already gained resistance you would be positive with the same strain. Drug resistance can then further occur in your own body depending on how you take medication. However, resistance to a new infection is rare. Drug resistance in your case is most likely to occur if you fail to complete the course of PEP and go on to become HIV positive.

Good day I was reading another article about drug resistance, I want to know that is it possible to be infected by HIV that is drug resistance or it become drug resistance when you are not taking your medication as prescribed. Iam exposed to HIV nd I am worried of this issue of drug resistance, since I am on PEP medication….

Hi Mzabalaza, getting HIV from a blow job is very rare. This is a link that explains risk based on behaviour: https://i-base.info/guides/testing/risks-for-transmission

I would like to know if I can get hiv from a blow job,I was given a blow job by one guy and during the process he spit and I saw blood in his spit. His gums were bad and obviously his gum blood got I to contact with my penis and have discovered that he is hiv positive. what are the chances that I might be infected also now.

    Hi Marlene,
PEP is only recommended by both UK and WHO guidelines if taken within 72 hours. After this the success of PEP working is not likely. Testing negative after 2 weeks is hopeful. Do you know what test was used? However now being on your third week, continuing the course for the full 28 days would be advised.

Odimune does contain the active ingredients as recommended to be used as PEP by the WHO guidelines. It contains Efavirenz, Dolutegravir, and Emtricitibane. Adco-emetivir contains two of these, not including Efavirenz. Efavirenz is known to have poor side effects and is not a requirement for successful PEP. Both medications you have been given can be used as PEP.

I was exposed to a person with HIV, we both didn’t know this and only after 2 weeks we found out. He tested Positive, I tested negative after the two weeks of unprotected sex. Please help me understand, I’m very scared if this Pep meds are working. The clinic gave me odimune which had heavy side effects, I went to the Doctor to get another opinion about my situation and he prescribed and changed me from Odimune after 4 days to Adco-emtevir saying odimune was to treat HIV and Adco-emtevir is prevent HIV.
Now I’m worried if this medication is working cause I’m got flu now. And I read that if you get sick with fever or rash it’s sign that the HIV has infected your body now and PEP is not successful. Please help me.
I’m still on the medication now it’s my 3rd week. I’m scared to go back and test if I’ll be positive.
How effective is Adco emtevir as Pep after 2 weeks of exposure and tested negative before starting Pep?

Hi Kwazi, yes, this is all likely to be anxiety and stress. HIV is very difficult to catch from one time and the PEP reduced this further. There is no need to worry like this.

Thank you for the response once again. I have completed the course of pep on the 31st of October, I’m currently waiting for November to end so I can take a lab test on the 30th or the 1st of December. During this waiting period I’ve had sore muscles, tired and now a swollen lymph node infornt of my ear and rash that is not itchy but sore if I touch it but it’s mostly scattered like three or four pimples at first. This is the third week without pep. I don’t know whether it’s my anxiety and stress that causes these symptoms or it’s Seroconversion. I feel like God hates me at this point. How can on encounter put one through so much hell. But I have learnt my lesson excessive consumption of alcohol can lead to stupid acts as I didn’t love the guy.

Hi Ntsako, you don’t need to get any additional PEP meds – just continue the full course.
