Q and A

Question

I am taking PEP, can I have uprotected sex?

I’ve been taking lamzid for 5 days now and I want to find out how this will
affect my pregnant partner when we have unprotected sex?

I am taking lamzid because I slept with someone without a condom and I felt
very unsafe so I went to the doctor within 72 hours and he prescribed lamzid for me.

My pregnant partner is only 7weeks pregnant will this harm our baby?

Answer

There is no data on whether PEP can harm the unborn baby. However, unprotected sex whilst you are taking PEP is not recommended. This is because you don’t know your status and you could infect your partner. That is why it is important to wait until you finish the course and have done the follow-up confirmatory test.

Hi Kwazi, you are right. After 12 weeks a rapid test will be conclusive of your status.

I have to wait because I will be using a rapid test not a lab test so I have heard that a rapid test is considered conclusive at 12 weeks or three months

Hi Kwazi, why are you waiting another month? 6 weeks after finishing PEP is long enough for a test to be conclusive.

Its six weeks after pep and I have to weight a whole month before I test. And I have lost weight and a itchy roof of my mouth and the rash is back but just small and not too. I’m scared, I just feel like I’m hiv positive as I also have flu and sore throat. And I have to wait another month. Guys please condomise or take Prep. The suspense is killing me.

Hi Sanjay, using a condom correctly means there is no chance of transmission. Even more so, starting PEP within 72 hours is when it is most effective. There is no possibility of contracting HIV.

Hello. So I had a protected sex( I was the insertive one) with someone who later confessed to be positive after I have had sex with him, not on treatment. The condom didn’t break and I didn’t even cum before I stopped, however I am a bit anxious, started PEP on the 50th hour. Currently still on PEP,. What is the possibility that there was a transmission and if so any chance the pep will work after 50hours of the protect sex?

Hi John, do you know the status of your partner? A course of 28 days is recommenced from each potential exposure. As this is a new event the course will need to be restated from this point. Have you let your partner know? As the condom broke there may be risk of transmission to them as you are currently on a course of PEP.

Hi Thamisanqa, not completing your course of PEP reduces the likelihood of it being effective. A full course of PEP started within 72 hours of exposure, taken for the full 28 day course is how best to reduce the risk of HIV transmission.

    Hey
What happened if you have finished PEP pills before 28 day?
