Q and A

Question

I am taking PEP, can I have uprotected sex?

I’ve been taking lamzid for 5 days now and I want to find out how this will
affect my pregnant partner when we have unprotected sex?

I am taking lamzid because I slept with someone without a condom and I felt
very unsafe so I went to the doctor within 72 hours and he prescribed lamzid for me.

My pregnant partner is only 7weeks pregnant will this harm our baby?

Answer

There is no data on whether PEP can harm the unborn baby. However, unprotected sex whilst you are taking PEP is not recommended. This is because you don’t know your status and you could infect your partner. That is why it is important to wait until you finish the course and have done the follow-up confirmatory test.

    Hi Sbongile,

It’s great that you’re undetectable and trying for a baby. Being undetectable means that HIV cannot be transmitted even if you don’t use condoms. Please see more info here about U=U.

If you and your husband feel that he needs to take HIV meds perhaps you could ask about PrEP? PrEP uses only two of the drugs that are in Tribuss. The drug that can make people feel dizzy is called efavirenz. It is the main drug in Tribuss. PrEP doesn’t use efavirenz.

What does your doctor say about this?

Many congratulations on becoming pregnant. Please see this guide to HIV pregnancy and women’s health.

    Hi John I,

No, it’s not recommended. You are likely getting a double the dose of 2 drugs by taking PEP and PrEP. You can check the names of all the drugs by looking at the label.

If you’re taking PEP you don’t need PrEP. There is increased risk of toxicity if you take both of them.

    Hi John I,

PEP and PrEP should not be taken at the same time by one person. These meds contain the same kind of drugs and if taken together the dose will be too strong. This can lead to increased side effects and toxicity.

    Hi Sam,

You are taking PEP and this can reduce any chance of another risk. So this looks like very low risk because PEP should work as PrEP. However, it’s not pleasant to try to force someone to take a test for HIV, Sam.

    Hello Milka,
I was on pep and I was not yet to compete the dose yet but then I met another girl which I had sex with and the condom broke accidentally but I tried to force her to go for the blood testing but she refused and am worried, But I didn’t stop with my dose, So where my question is , Is it advisable for me go and get another dose or i finished this one

    Hi Milka,
As Angelina says on this question, condomless sex is not recommended if you are on PEP. That’s because you don’t know your status. So it’s better to wait until after the test to confirm you’re HIV negative a month after you’ve finished PEP.
