Q and A

Question

I am taking PEP, can I have uprotected sex?

I’ve been taking lamzid for 5 days now and I want to find out how this will
affect my pregnant partner when we have unprotected sex?

I am taking lamzid because I slept with someone without a condom and I felt
very unsafe so I went to the doctor within 72 hours and he prescribed lamzid for me.

My pregnant partner is only 7weeks pregnant will this harm our baby?

Answer

There is no data on whether PEP can harm the unborn baby. However, unprotected sex whilst you are taking PEP is not recommended. This is because you don’t know your status and you could infect your partner. That is why it is important to wait until you finish the course and have done the follow-up confirmatory test.

Hi Mash. if you are taking PEP you do not know your HIV status. If the PEP hasn’t worked, you could be HIV positive. Depending on the type of HIV test used, guidelines recommend waiting for 6-8 weeks after the last dose of PEP before the test will be accurate.

Is two weeks safe for me to have unprotected sex with my partner while taking pep?

Hi Sipho, if your partner has an undetectable viral load there is no risk of transmission. IF you don’t know this, then using another form or protection will work.

Please see the Q about when PEP can work as PrEP.

    Hi

I am on 24th day on PEP following an exposure. My girlfriend is HIV positive (we both don’t know her current viral load but she did have a problem over a year ago)
I am meeting her today. I wanted to know whether i would be at risk if we had unprotected sex.

Hi Margate, during the course of PEP, the level of drug will be high enough in your body to work as PrEP and you do not need to extend your course of PEP. You can finish your first course of PEP as expected.

If someone is on PEP and again he gets unprotected sex before finishing the dose, doe s he need the second dose of PEP or he continues with the fist dose only???

Hi Acram, contact with private parts (not penetrative) is not a risk for HIV transmission. These are the facts that can change the level of risk when concerned about an HIV exposure: https://i-base.info/guides/testing/risks-for-transmission

While you are on PEP it is difficult to be certain of your status. This is because you do not know if PEP has worked and if it hasn’t, you cannot be sure of your viral load and if you can pass on HIV. While you are unsure, having sex with a condom is safe, or if your girlfriend would be willing to take PrEP? This is a medication to prevent transmission before risky exposures: https://i-base.info/prep-for-women/

    Hi,
I am on my 15th day if pep, i had unprotected sex with a girl once and in the morning i found out she was hiv positive.
After 15days of pep now my girlfriend demands sex, we did romance but not penetrative sex, though i there was contact with our private parts. Am worried that is it possible to have infected her.
And at this time is it possibel that i can infect her if we had uprotected sex.

Hi Luke, it is likely that the risk here is small, if any risk at all. Please follow this link that describes how risk of transmission changes with different factors inc. type of sex, medication and time of sex: https://i-base.info/guides/testing/risks-for-transmission

    Hey there,
I had unprotected sex with a guy, we start orally and during second round we started unprotected penetration, O was a bottom, it was very short and I stopped it before any of us could get too exited or finish, as I panicked. He assure me that he is negative however blocked my contact.
I am on prep for 3 days and had unprotected sex with my boyfriend. How much risk did I caused to him?
