Q and A

Question

I am taking PEP, can I have uprotected sex?

I’ve been taking lamzid for 5 days now and I want to find out how this will
affect my pregnant partner when we have unprotected sex?

I am taking lamzid because I slept with someone without a condom and I felt
very unsafe so I went to the doctor within 72 hours and he prescribed lamzid for me.

My pregnant partner is only 7weeks pregnant will this harm our baby?

Answer

There is no data on whether PEP can harm the unborn baby. However, unprotected sex whilst you are taking PEP is not recommended. This is because you don’t know your status and you could infect your partner. That is why it is important to wait until you finish the course and have done the follow-up confirmatory test.

Hi Tina, how long have you been on PEP and what medication are you taking for PEP? Often PEP and PrEP contains some of the same drugs which means that PEP will work as PrEP and you will be protected. After 7 days of PEP the medication will be at a high enough concentration in your body to be effective as PrEP.

Why are you doubtful of your partners result?

I had unprotected sex with someone whose status am not sure about so I started pep 68 hours after the incident. I like him and I would like to have sex with him again. I insisted on a test and he came back with negative results which I don’t trust so much. While on pep, if I have unprotected sex with him will I be at risk of exposure also is there a way I can test him without his knowledge

Hi Shakira, it would be recommended to practise protected sex with a condom while you are unsure of your status. While you do not know it would be possible to pass on HIV to them.

Hi Vero, no you do not. 6 days in will have afforded a level of protection against HIV. You only need to complete your current course of PEP, there is no reason to extend this further than the 28 days.

Hi Kwazi, there is no reason for any further testing. Your most recent test is conclusive. You are HIV negative. Are you able to speak to anyone with regards to your anxiety?

No but I’m thinking of doing a lab test because my anxiety is failing me. At the same time I feel like I am mistrusting God as I had begged him for this last chance at life.
