Q and A

Question

I am taking PEP, can I have uprotected sex?

I’ve been taking lamzid for 5 days now and I want to find out how this will
affect my pregnant partner when we have unprotected sex?

I am taking lamzid because I slept with someone without a condom and I felt
very unsafe so I went to the doctor within 72 hours and he prescribed lamzid for me.

My pregnant partner is only 7weeks pregnant will this harm our baby?

Answer

There is no data on whether PEP can harm the unborn baby. However, unprotected sex whilst you are taking PEP is not recommended. This is because you don’t know your status and you could infect your partner. That is why it is important to wait until you finish the course and have done the follow-up confirmatory test.

Hi Kwazi, yes this test is conclusive. As you have waited 3 months after PEP you can consider this test conclusive. You do not have HIV. Have you been able to see a doctor about your symptoms?

Hi lee, yes it is possible to infect your parter while on PEP. If you use a condom there will not be a risk to your partner.

Hi Jane, do you know the status of this man? Depending on the type of PEP you are taking it might work to protect you. Does your partner know that you are taking PEP? It can be a risk to your parter if you are not using a condom.

Hi TR. This is a very unlikely situation. It is possible to transmit HIV while on PEP. However as you were at the end of the course it is likely PEP would suppress HIV and mean you cannot transmit it. This being said it is much more likely that your first exposure was not with HIV. One drunken exposure does not carry a high risk and it is possible there was a condom. This would suggest you are not carrying HIV and are at no risk of transmission. Hi
I had sex with someone and I was not sure if they used a condom the entire time as I was drunk so my memory is failing me. So the following day I went to the clinic and got PEP.
In the morning of my last day -28th day of pep (I was taking pep at 8pm every night) I had sex with my boyfriend with no protection we don’t normally use protection, now I’m worried if I might have infected him and I feel terrible.

Is it possible that I might have transferred HIV to my bad if indeed the person I slept with when I was drunk had the virus?

Hi Ali, starting PEP as early as you did is great. You are not likely to contract HIV. Even when not on PEP, contracting HIV after one exposure is very rare.

What are my chances of contracting hiv after I had unprotected sex with hiv positive person but 4 hours later I was placed under pep med for 28 days.
