Q and A

Question

I am taking PEP, can I have uprotected sex?

I’ve been taking lamzid for 5 days now and I want to find out how this will
affect my pregnant partner when we have unprotected sex?

I am taking lamzid because I slept with someone without a condom and I felt
very unsafe so I went to the doctor within 72 hours and he prescribed lamzid for me.

My pregnant partner is only 7weeks pregnant will this harm our baby?

Answer

There is no data on whether PEP can harm the unborn baby. However, unprotected sex whilst you are taking PEP is not recommended. This is because you don’t know your status and you could infect your partner. That is why it is important to wait until you finish the course and have done the follow-up confirmatory test.

Hi Arthur, yes on-demand PrEP works for men having vaginal sex. More information about this can be found here: https://i-base.info/guides/prep/on-demand

Hi Justy, no you do not need to be on PEP. As your partner was on PEP when you had unprotected sex the risk of transmission is very low. It is not a big enough risk to recommend taking PEP.

Hey my partner was exposed and had to take pep. Unknowingly we had u protected sex. Am I save or should I go for pep too? It has been 3 days now and he has been on treatment for 7 days before we had sex.

Hi Jay, your partner does not need to take PEP. As you are on PEP there is very little risk of transmission, if any. This event will not effect either of you.

Hi Nathan, you do not need to extend the course. As you were already taking Acriptega, you would have been protected from further exposures. You can finish your course when originally planned.

I am taking acriptega for prep for 3 weeks and had another risky encounter today. Should I extend the pep course?

Hi David, while on PEP you cannot be sure of your status. PEP would suppress any viral load making transmission very unlikely (your partner does not need to be on PEP) but it is recommended to use a condom/not have sex until you can confirm your status.

Hi. I understand that if you have an undetectable viral load then you cannot infect your partner, right? But now if you test negative (like I have) and get on PEP because of exposure, would you still remain having an undetectable viral load as a result of the suppression from the drugs during the duration of the course? I’m worried for my partner because the condom broke and I came inside her, but I’d been on PEP for two weeks already when it happened.
