Q and A

Question

I am taking PEP, can I have uprotected sex?

I’ve been taking lamzid for 5 days now and I want to find out how this will
affect my pregnant partner when we have unprotected sex?

I am taking lamzid because I slept with someone without a condom and I felt
very unsafe so I went to the doctor within 72 hours and he prescribed lamzid for me.

My pregnant partner is only 7weeks pregnant will this harm our baby?

Answer

There is no data on whether PEP can harm the unborn baby. However, unprotected sex whilst you are taking PEP is not recommended. This is because you don’t know your status and you could infect your partner. That is why it is important to wait until you finish the course and have done the follow-up confirmatory test.

Hi, when was your last dose of PEP? If it was within 24 hours you can take PEP for a further 2 days (similar to on-demand PrEP) and there is no risk. If this exposure was more than 24 hours, PEP will no longer be in your body and a new course will be needed if this was a high risk exposure.

I did sex immediately after PEP.IS THERE ANY RISK OF INFECTION AFTER COMPLETING PEP SUCCESSFULLY AS PRESCRIBED?

Hi Jack, 14 days is too early to finish a course of PEP. PEP should be taken for 21 days as a minimum and ideally for 28 days. Stopping early will mean that it will not be effective. Is there a reason you want to stop at 14 days?

Hi Issac, after 4 days you are no longer protected by PEP. Have you considered using PrEP (https://i-base.info/guides/prep)?. Was this a high risk exposure? Do you think you need PEP e.g., is there a high risk of HIV?

Hi doc …I just got out of pep treatment then had sex 4 days later should I begin a new pep treatment or is the last pep treatment still effective

Hi Maria, as your partner tested negative there would be no risk of transmission. You do not need to continue PEP as you were not exposed to HIV.

Hi Agbo, Acriptega can be used as treatment or PEP. PEP is a course of treatment taken for a month after an exposure to prevent transmission. Do you have a reason to think his test is not true? As you are now on PrEP you are not at risk from further exposures even if you do not use a condom. What are you using for PrEP?
