Q and A

Question

I am taking PEP, can I have uprotected sex?

I’ve been taking lamzid for 5 days now and I want to find out how this will
affect my pregnant partner when we have unprotected sex?

I am taking lamzid because I slept with someone without a condom and I felt
very unsafe so I went to the doctor within 72 hours and he prescribed lamzid for me.

My pregnant partner is only 7weeks pregnant will this harm our baby?

Answer

There is no data on whether PEP can harm the unborn baby. However, unprotected sex whilst you are taking PEP is not recommended. This is because you don’t know your status and you could infect your partner. That is why it is important to wait until you finish the course and have done the follow-up confirmatory test.

Hi Jerry, as you have tested negative it would not have been possible to pass on HIV while you were taking PEP.

I have unprotected sex with my partner when I was taking PEP. Then I take test after finished PEP 6 weeks and have negative result. Because I don’t know how PEP actually work. Can I infected my partner because of that unprorected sex? I am very worried.

Hi Zane, no you do not need another course of PEP. PEP acts as PrEP for the duration of the course. This means that you are protected from further exposures for the duration of the course. You can stop PEP today as expected.

Hi Abuhurainu, unfortunately PEP will not work after 5 days. It is onnly recommended to be taken within 72 hours after the exposure. After this time, PEP will not be effective.

Hi Tshepiso, no you do not need to restart. As you are on PEP, the treatment will work like PrEP for the duration of the course. This means that you are protected from further exposures while you are taking PEP. You can finish the course of PEP when you originally expected to.

    Hi Doc. Beverly here.
My partner is HIV+, we found out 2 months ago. He’s been on meds since finding out. I’ve been on PEP after my last exposure but on day 27, with one pill to go, the condom broke. Do I have to restart PEP?

Hi James, while you are on PEP you are protected from further exposures. You are not at risk of infection from this exposure.
