Q and A

Question

I am taking PEP, can I have uprotected sex?

I’ve been taking lamzid for 5 days now and I want to find out how this will
affect my pregnant partner when we have unprotected sex?

I am taking lamzid because I slept with someone without a condom and I felt
very unsafe so I went to the doctor within 72 hours and he prescribed lamzid for me.

My pregnant partner is only 7weeks pregnant will this harm our baby?

Answer

There is no data on whether PEP can harm the unborn baby. However, unprotected sex whilst you are taking PEP is not recommended. This is because you don’t know your status and you could infect your partner. That is why it is important to wait until you finish the course and have done the follow-up confirmatory test.

Hi Arthur, while you are on PEP you are protected from further exposures. You are not at risk of infection from this exposure.

Hi Ela, were you on PEP when this happened? If you were there is no risk of transmission. PEP will act as PrEP for the duration of the course. If this exposure happened after you finished PEP there is risk of transmission. For more information follow this link: https://i-base.info/qa/factsheets/hiv-transmission-and-testing

Hi Musa, as you started before 72 hours PEP will be effective. In most cases it is around 80% effective. This does not take into account the actual risk of the exposure. This means it is usually more effective than 80%. After PEP you can test from 6 weeks after your last dose using a 4th generation test. This will be a conclusive result and will confirm your status.

Hi Doreen, as long as your started PEP within 72 hours of the first exposure, PEP will be effective. Do you know if your partner was on HIV treatment? If this is the case there is likely no risk to yourself. HIV treatment can prevent transmission of HIV via sex. Other factors can change the risk of transmission. Hi Lindiwe, before starting PrEP do you know if your kidneys were healthy? And as these are recent side effects, has anything else changed that may be the cause of this? e.g., different environment, new laundry detergent or different fabrics?

Are you experiencing this itching all over or is it in specific parts of your body? As this is a new symptom it is important you mention it to your doctor. It would best to speak with the one who prescribed your PrEP to begin with.

Hello I started prep 6months ago and last month had unprotected sex but continued taking prep my issue is that my body is itchy should I be worried or is it something else that’s making my body itch?
