Q and A

Question

I am taking PEP, can I have uprotected sex?

I’ve been taking lamzid for 5 days now and I want to find out how this will
affect my pregnant partner when we have unprotected sex?

I am taking lamzid because I slept with someone without a condom and I felt
very unsafe so I went to the doctor within 72 hours and he prescribed lamzid for me.

My pregnant partner is only 7weeks pregnant will this harm our baby?

Answer

There is no data on whether PEP can harm the unborn baby. However, unprotected sex whilst you are taking PEP is not recommended. This is because you don’t know your status and you could infect your partner. That is why it is important to wait until you finish the course and have done the follow-up confirmatory test.

Hi Victoria, PEP only works while you are taking it, so you would need another course of PEP for any later risks. It might be better though to ask a doctor about PrEP. This would be a way you could protect yourself in the future.

Is your boyfriend HIV positive? Or has he not tested? If he is positive and on effective treatment, this can also protect you.

Hi Wahabu, if your partner knew they were HIV positive, then they were probably taking effective treatment.

Please read the info at this link to understand how the meds would alos protect you:

The PEP will also protect you.

Hi Matt, while taking PEP you do not also need to be taking PrEP. PEP is able to protect you from further exposures for the duration of the course. This means that you were protected for the further risky exposures you had.

Hi! I started taking last September but on the 2nd day of taking prep, I had an unsafe encounter (where he inserted his only once). I know he’s taking prep but I still decided to take PEP just to be sure. But during the period that I’m taking my pep, I had 2 Saturdays where I had some unsafe encounters. During the time I’m taking my pep, I still continued taking my prep. Is there a chance I’m still protected despite the times I had unprotected sex while on Pep?
