Q and A

Question

I am taking PEP, can I have uprotected sex?

I’ve been taking lamzid for 5 days now and I want to find out how this will
affect my pregnant partner when we have unprotected sex?

I am taking lamzid because I slept with someone without a condom and I felt
very unsafe so I went to the doctor within 72 hours and he prescribed lamzid for me.

My pregnant partner is only 7weeks pregnant will this harm our baby?

Answer

There is no data on whether PEP can harm the unborn baby. However, unprotected sex whilst you are taking PEP is not recommended. This is because you don’t know your status and you could infect your partner. That is why it is important to wait until you finish the course and have done the follow-up confirmatory test.

Hello I had protected sex with a person that is HIV positive, I’m a little worried about exposure, the condom did not break to my knowledge. Should I get tested or should I consider taking Pep?

Hi Jonathan, using a condom means there is no risk of transmission. You do not need to be worried. Please follow this link for more information: https://i-base.info/qa/factsheets/hiv-transmission-and-testing

Hi Steve, as her viral load is below 200 there is no risk of transmission. It needs to be above 200 for a minimal risk to be present. If you are unsure of their status, PEP could be used as a precaution. This is a course of treatment for 30 days using HIV medication to prevent transmission. Having sex with someone HIV positive does not guarantee transmission. Risk is altered by a number of factors, of which they are explained here: https://i-base.info/guides/testing/risks-for-transmission

Hey i was exposed and the day i did we carried an RVS strip test and found out she was positive, i followed up with prep, and she went for a viral load test which she was less than 20 when it was carried out. So we continued having sex and just when i was about 5 days off prep the condom broke. I would really like to know what risk i could face because i didnt actually see the vora load result and if i was to act like it was above that what would i do next?

Hi Bianca, PEP will not harm you or baby. While you are taking PEP you are protected from exposure. Though when PEP ends you can consider using PrEP (https://i-base.info/guides/prep) or a condom will provide protection. Is your partner on treatment? If they are with a suppressed viral load there is no need for protection as they would be unable to pass on HIV. This is called U=U: https://i-base.info/u-equals-u/

Hi Dannii, while you are on PEP it will also act as PrEP. For the time you are on PEP you are protected from further exposures. You do not need to take PrEP as well.

Hello there, a condom split on me during sex and I had reason to believe that my sexual partner was hiv+ and am 14 days into my pep course. My regular sexual partner whom I have unprotected sex with has asked me to meet up. I have explained the situation and they have no concerns and still wish to have unprotected sex with me. I usually take prep (had forgotten to take when the split condom incident happened) am I protected to the same level whilst taking pep as I usually am when taking prep?

Hi Vision, it is a good thing that you are not feeling anything. The drug should be able to work without you experiencing side effects. As long as you take Reydin as prescribed it will work and be as effective as PEP is. You should not expect to ‘feel’ anything to be sure that it is working.
