Q and A

Question

I am taking PEP, can I have uprotected sex?

I’ve been taking lamzid for 5 days now and I want to find out how this will
affect my pregnant partner when we have unprotected sex?

I am taking lamzid because I slept with someone without a condom and I felt
very unsafe so I went to the doctor within 72 hours and he prescribed lamzid for me.

My pregnant partner is only 7weeks pregnant will this harm our baby?

Answer

There is no data on whether PEP can harm the unborn baby. However, unprotected sex whilst you are taking PEP is not recommended. This is because you don’t know your status and you could infect your partner. That is why it is important to wait until you finish the course and have done the follow-up confirmatory test.

Hi Sidi, unfortunately while you are on PEP you are unsure of your status. Though the risk is small, having unprotected sex with your partner can risk HIV transmission. You can test from 6 weeks after PEP using a 4th generation test.

Hi Aneesh, this is a very limited exposure, if there was any risk at all. Taking PEP after 4 days will not have any impact on preventing HIV. After 3 days PEP does not work. For this reason it would not be recommended to have the course of PEP and experience potential side effects, when it will not be of any benefit.

It is more likely that she is negative than positive. And if she is positive, it is still more likely that she will be on treatment and unable to pass on HIV.

I had sex with a girl not totally unprotected but I’ve put 4,5times in her like for 4sec of time after this i used protection
But i don’t know her status so i started taking pep from 4th day of exposure.
Will it save me if she has positive.

Hi Musasizi, do you have reason to think your parter is HIV positive? and if not taking treatment? In the UK PEP is given on the basis of risk of the exposure. This link will help you determine your own risk: https://i-base.info/guides/testing/risks-for-transmission

In the UK low risk does not have eligibility for PEP. There is more risk of side effects from PEP than the small risk of HIV transmission.

Hi Frank, you do not need to extend your course of PEP. PEP will act as PrEP while you are taking it. This means you are protected from further exposures throughout the course of PEP. You can complete your course of PEP when initially planned.

Helo am frank, I had un protected sex with a girl and I found out she as been on ARVs from 2014, but I was on pep for 13 days, should I extend my doze for more than 30days or I should stop at that,

Hi Shakes, while your partner is on PEP their status is no known. PEP stops HIV tests being accurate. The risk is low as PEP would help prevent transmission but it is not recommended to have sex without protection. This can be using PrEP yourself or using a condom.
