Q and A

Question

I am taking PEP, can I have uprotected sex?

I’ve been taking lamzid for 5 days now and I want to find out how this will
affect my pregnant partner when we have unprotected sex?

I am taking lamzid because I slept with someone without a condom and I felt
very unsafe so I went to the doctor within 72 hours and he prescribed lamzid for me.

My pregnant partner is only 7weeks pregnant will this harm our baby?

Answer

There is no data on whether PEP can harm the unborn baby. However, unprotected sex whilst you are taking PEP is not recommended. This is because you don’t know your status and you could infect your partner. That is why it is important to wait until you finish the course and have done the follow-up confirmatory test.

Hi Ma, continue taking the course you are on. You do not need different medication or to extend your current course. PEP can protect you from further exposures while you are taking the treatment.

I am in day 3 using peps and I was pre-expost again, should I start new pills of pep or I should continue using the previous one?

Hi Eman, as she is on PEP this is low risk. You do not need to take PEP yourself. PEP would have suppressed any HIV in her body making transmission very difficult. Did you use a condom?

Please see here for more information about transmission: https://i-base.info/qa/factsheets/hiv-transmission-and-testing

Hi Power, what symptoms are you experiencing? It can be used as PEP but it is often not recommended. This is because it is a ‘boosted’ combination and you may experience ‘heavier’ side effects than other suitable combinations. In most cases TLD is used as PEP: https://i-base.info/guides/14970

    Hello

I was given Aluvia and tenovir as PEP. Are these safe?

They are giving me severe symptoms.

Hi Paul, there is no risk of transmission. When someone is undetectable it is not possible to transmit HIV. This is explained by U=U: https://i-base.info/guides/testing/uu-undetectable-untransmittable

Oral sex carries very low risk of transmission. Saliva contains anti-viral properties which makes it very difficult for HIV to survive and transmit between people. For this reason PEP is not recommended for possible oral sex exposures.

Hi I had oral sex with a lady who I learned is hiv positive afterwards, I’m on day 15 of PEP and she send me her results yesterday which showed that her viral load is undetectable. What are my chances of being infected?

Hi Frankiy, you do not need to restart your course of PEP. PEP contains some of the same drugs as PrEP meaning it can work like PrEP. After 22 days there would be enough PEP in your body to prevent any further possible exposures. You can stop your course of PEP when originally planned.

I had an exposure before and I was on peps day 22, then I had a re-exposure should I start another course of pep
