Q and A

Question

I am taking PEP, can I have uprotected sex?

I’ve been taking lamzid for 5 days now and I want to find out how this will
affect my pregnant partner when we have unprotected sex?

I am taking lamzid because I slept with someone without a condom and I felt
very unsafe so I went to the doctor within 72 hours and he prescribed lamzid for me.

My pregnant partner is only 7weeks pregnant will this harm our baby?

Answer

There is no data on whether PEP can harm the unborn baby. However, unprotected sex whilst you are taking PEP is not recommended. This is because you don’t know your status and you could infect your partner. That is why it is important to wait until you finish the course and have done the follow-up confirmatory test.

Hi Joan, missing a single dose in a course of PEP is unlikely to reduce how effective the treatment is. As you did take this dose also, being only 15 hours late will have very little effect. You can continue your course of PEP as normal. You do not need to do anything more.

Hi Damaris, no your partner does not need to be on PEP. Their own risk is minimal and does not require any intervention. While on PEP it is recommended to use a condom/PrEP or avoid sex, but it cases that you do have unprotected sex there is still only very limited risk. You and your partner do not need to worry.

Hi Amos, yes you can have sex. Why do you feel exposed?

    Hi?
My partner and i are on pep
This is because we felt exposed.
    Can we have unprotected sex?
We were hiv – before starting the pep

Hi Sammeer, when unsure of your status it is usually recommended to avoid sex before testing. After completing PEP your risk of HIV is low but because you cannot test immediately after PEP there is small risk of transmission. as you have mentioned, you can test at 6 weeks using a 4th generation test and this will confirm your result. If you have sex before this, you can use a condom to prevent any risk of HIV.

Is it generally safe to resume sex after 28 days of pep therapy? Or wait 6 weeks after the last day to get confirmation test. The treatment plan i was given says wait till therapy is complete to resume, does that mean the 30 day course of pep . ( Got mine from online pharmacy, so notuch of help other than prescription).
