Q and A

Question

I am taking PEP, can I have uprotected sex?

I’ve been taking lamzid for 5 days now and I want to find out how this will
affect my pregnant partner when we have unprotected sex?

I am taking lamzid because I slept with someone without a condom and I felt
very unsafe so I went to the doctor within 72 hours and he prescribed lamzid for me.

My pregnant partner is only 7weeks pregnant will this harm our baby?

Answer

There is no data on whether PEP can harm the unborn baby. However, unprotected sex whilst you are taking PEP is not recommended. This is because you don’t know your status and you could infect your partner. That is why it is important to wait until you finish the course and have done the follow-up confirmatory test.

    Hi Bold,

i-Base is a project focused on HIV treatment. Our services are mainly for people who are HIV positive and who want to know about treatment.

We are not a service for people worried about their risk of HIV or about HIV testing. It is not that we don’t care – this is just not what we are set up for.

We understand the need for good information about HIV risks and HIV testing – so we developed two very detailed resources that you can see here.

    Hi
I had sex unprotected with a new gf then took pep in less than 24 hours.then four days after we had another u protected sex while am still on pep. Then on the fifth day we agreed to test together, she turned to be positive and am negative. Same day she went to the clinic to test again and the results was negative 3 days after she tested negative I stopped pep for 4 days due to side effects and return to it again. What are my chances of not being infected.

    Hi Khilile,

Taking PEP for 3 days can help prevent HIV. But did you start PEP soon after your first exposure? Starting PEP very quickly is important for it to work properly.

If you think you might be at ongoing risk of HIV can you ask for access to PrEP? If after finishing PEP you still test HIV negative, you could think about using PrEP instead.

Here’s more info about PrEP and PEP.

    Hi Victor,

Do you mean you’ve been taking PEP for 15 days?

PEP is taken for 4 weeks after you think you’ve been exposed to HIV. PEP usually contains three drugs. PEP needs to be taken as soon after exposure as possible. This is preferably within hours rather than days.

You have to test for HIV 4 weeks after finishing PEP to confirm it has worked. So, as Angelina says above, unprotected sex whilst you are taking PEP is not recommended. This is because you don’t know your status and you could infect your partner.

PrEP is taken before exposure and there are just two drugs in it.

Please see this link for more information about PEP and PrEP.

    Hi Sandy,

Giving oral sex to a woman is likely to be zero or near-zero risk. Please see this guide to HIV and oral sex for more info.

    Hi Sandy,

It’s not easy to transmit HIV through oral sex. Please see this Q&A.

But PEP can protect you from HIV while you’re taking it.
