Q and A

Question

What are the implications if I stop my medications while in the US?

Hi,
What are the implications if I stop my meds to take a holiday in the USA? I have been on medications since April 08 and have a CD4 of 200 and viral load of less than 50 copies. I intend to travel for 3 weeks but realise it may not be possible with my medicines.

Answer

Stopping is not something that is recommendable, keeping in mind that your CD4 count is not at its best at the moment.

There are, however, means of dealing with the medications and the US ban. You may decide to send them in advance to a friend or the hotel where you’ll stay.

That usually works perfectly OK. So, you take your last dose on the airplane or shortly before you cross the border and you do not have any medications on you at the time of the possible baggage check.

Some people risk and take their pills in the bag, but this may be a bit risky.
